Many of you have heard about the ongoing fight of Trey Love against cancer.  This extraordinary child and his family are a testament to the strength and perseverance required to combat this disease, as well as to the power of community support. Earlier this week, Trey's Mother was contacted unexpectedly by Summer Schuette of Fort Myers, Florida.  Mrs. Schuette, who has never met Trey or any of his family, proceeded to berate Trey's Mom, proclaiming that "God is punishing" her by killing her child. My friends at the B-Strong foundation work directly with the families of pediatric cancer patients in the Philadelphia area, and are close friends with Trey's family.  This is not an exaggeration, hoax, or urban legend. Summer Schuette owns a pet-sitting business in Cape Coral, Florida.  At this time, there are web contacts available on the company website as well ...Read More »

Let’s be Clear…

{ Posted on May 06 2011 by Kirk }
"Let's be clear on this" Obama DID NOT kill Bin Laden.  OUR MILITARY, who Obama just a few weeks ago was debating on whether or not to PAY, did.  Obama just happened to be the one in office when our soldiers finally found OBL and took him out.  This is NOT an Obama victory, but an AMERICAN victory!!" Unless you're one of the last remaining adults in the US without a Facebook account, you've no doubt seen this popular post in force in the days since the news of Osama Bin Laden's death broke.  I've seen it posted and re-posted by at least a dozen people to date, and surprisingly, it's still got momentum almost a week after the initial buzz. So, Obama did not personally pull the trigger ending the life of Bin Laden. NO SHIT.   Even in a world with out any ...Read More »

My “High Flyers”

  Having lived my entire life as a die-hard fan of the Philadelphia Flyers, I have seen more than my share of ups-and-downs with the orange and black. It is hard to argue that we are fortunate to have one of the most storied franchises in modern sports right here in Philly. Whether you love them or hate them, one thing is for sure: The Flyers have never been short in the personality department.   Unfortunately, I am just a bit too young to have really enjoyed what is the undisputed "golden age" of Flyers history. The revelry surrounding the "Bullies", the personification of the city and the championships they produced belong to my pop's generation.   Don't get me wrong, I have had countless moments of pride, glory, and near-perfection in my time as a Flyers fan. My memories over the years have ...Read More »

Little Hands…

When my six year old daughter was given an assignment to research North America, I was excited to dust off my Google Earth app and get my knowledge on. What I did not expect, however was that the geography lesson quickly transformed into current events as soon as our attention was brought to the Caribbean islands and most prominently, Port-Au-Prince. Until that moment, we had not discussed with Alyssa the earthquake in Haiti and tried to explain (without traumatizing her) the dire situation that the Haitian people, especially children, were faced with. The always over-compassionate child was absolutely devastated. For the next few days, we did our best to help Alyssa make sense of the disaster. After finally convincing her that we are not likely to experience an earthquake in Pennsylvania, we began our rebuttal of numerous aid strategies, ...Read More »

Help Me Light The Night!

On October 3rd, 2009 I will be participating in the "Light The Night" fundraiser walk to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This event is aimed at raising much needed funds for cancer research and treatment programs in the region.   We will also be walking to honor the memory of Brandon Crosby, my daughter's schoolmate who at 9 years of age, succumbed to his cancer in May of 2009. Brandon's family and friends continue to coordinate many local fundraising events in support of cancer research and treatment.   You may also know of our friend Stefania and her recent cancer fight. Even though her battle had a much better outcome, it was a very sobering lesson for me to witness the devastation this disease can cause on the families it affects.   In memory of Brandon, and in support of Stefania and ...Read More »

Support families of fallen PPD Officers

Anyone living in or around the city of Philadelphia is painfully aware of the recent losses suffered by our Police Department.  The recent tragedies have presented an extreme burden on financial resources allocated for the families of fallen officers. In light of the recent tragedies in the PPD, as well as in the suburbs, it pains me to think of the daunting financial burden spouses, partners, and children of these brave men & women must face in the midst of their bereavement. For survivors of fallen Philadelphia Police Officers, the Michael G. Lutz F.O.P lodge #5 manages the fund dedicated to providing financial support.  At this time, there is a well-publicized shortage of funds available for the support of the surviving families of fallen officers. There is a fund-raising benefit planned for Friday, February 20th, the ...Read More »
